Coloring of  Aussies is as varied as that of  my grandmother’s speckled butter beans.  No two are alike which makes the breed so interesting.

Mini-Aussie Description

Toy and Mini-Aussie Description

Toy and Miniature Australian Shepherds are smaller versions of the standard Aussie with the same body structure and coat.   Toy Aussies range from 10”-14” and Miniatures from 14-18”.

The Aussie is an intelligent herding dog that is animated and agile.  As a pet, the Aussie is happiest close to their owners and staying busy with a “job”. That job can be obedience training, agility or working with sheep or ducks on a farm or just romping with the kids in the backyard.  Aussies love to play Frisbee and ball if taught retrieval.  They are also good jumpers so Agility work puts a spark in their eye.

It is very important that Aussies be socialized as puppies and continued throughout their life with all sizes and types of people and animals.  They get very attached to their skin family and are full of personality.

The coat of an Aussie can be multi-colored (merle), bi-colored or tri-colored.  Eyes can be amber, brown, blue or one of each. (See color link in sidebar) The tail is naturally bobbed or docked as a newborn.  The distinctive feathers around the face and pantaloons in the rear create the well-known Aussie look.

Aussies with loving care and vet checkups have a life expectancy of 12-14 years and minimal health problems that are breed related.  Additional information at Toy Australian Shepherd Association of America and Miniature Australian Club of America.
